Pastel Underpainting Techniques 

Discover the benefits of a strong underpainting combining a variety of media. Marcia will introduce you to multiple approaches unique to her process in achieving freshness and looseness by demonstrating her multimedia methods.

Enhance your creativity, employing this intuitive approach to find this solid base for ALL subject matter. Give yourself permission to break the rules, experience material interactions of inks, water and oil-based media, with gouache texture exploration and finish strong with expressive pastel mark making. Marcia enjoys quality one on one time helping individual students.

UART Premium Sanded Pastel Paper will be provided to all students.

About the Artist 

New Orleans area artist, Marcia Holmes, native to Mississippi, is a PSA Master, IAPS Eminent-MC. Primarily an abstract pastelist, in 23 years, she has exhibited in over 16 solo gallery shows, with enumerable distinctions in juried group and museum exhibitions; notably, the prestigious Ogden Museum of Southern Art-Louisiana Contemporary Exh.(LA), Butler Institute (OH), Lauren Rogers Museum of Art (permanent collection-MS), Festival International du Pastel - Feytiat & Salon du Pastel International-Giverny, France, Vose Galleries (MA), Salmagundi Club & National Arts Club (NY). Most recently she received Best of Show-Connecticut Pastel Soc. 2021 Renaissance in Pastel - Slater Memorial Museum, Norwich, CT. Known for her water lily paintings, Spring 2022, Marcia receives Pastel Journal’s top Founder’s Award-Pastel 100 feature, and her abstract expressionist painting is juried into AWA “BREAKING THROUGH: The Rise of American Women Artists” - Customs House Museum (TN). Selected featured publications and books include Fine Art Connoisseur, Plein Air Magazine, American Art Collector, Pastel Journal; Art Journey Abstract Painting: A Celebration of Contemporary Art and Pure Pastel: Contemporary Works by Today's Top Artists. She has served as juror of the Abstract/Non-objective category for Pastel Journal's Pastel 100 competitions.
